The MA Education (Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE)) and the PG Diploma in ECCE programmes were launched by the School of Education (SES) in collaboration with the Centre for Early Childhood Education and Development (CECED) in July 2014. The programmes have been supported by Tata Trusts.

MA Education (ECCE) is proposed as a two year programme with an exit option after the first year, which leads to a PG Diploma in ECCE. Direct admission to PG Diploma is also available. The first year courses of the MA Education (ECCE)/PG Diploma have been conceptualised with the aim of creating human resource to support professional upgradation of quality of planning, supervision and management of ECCE programmes for young children. The second year courses of MA Education (ECCE) move towards a more in-depth and scholarly understanding of ECCE as a discipline, anchored in interdisciplinary engagement with multiple disciplines including child development, sociology, history, critical pedagogy, psychoanalytic frame, anthropology and management.

Both these programmes have a strong field attachment component to ensure building of an exhaustive knowledge base connecting the theoretical foundations of ECCE with the field. These field placements have also provided students the opportunities to understand the diversity in ECCE contexts, curriculum, pedagogy and assessment practices. Over the past two years, the students of these programmes have been placed at Salwan Public School, Santa Maria Integrated Learning Environment, IIT Nursery School, Jamia Nursery School, Shikshantar, Heritage School, Mobile crèches, Pratham Balwadis and Anganwadis, Delhi Council for Child Welfare (DCCW), Palna, Raj Kumari Amrit Kaur Child Study Centre, Delhi Public School, Organisation for Early Literacy Promotion (OELP), Ajmer and so on.

These programmes aim to build professionals in the field of ECCE who would have in-depth knowledge of ECCE from multidisciplinary perspectives and have capabilities to work as researchers, curriculum developers, supervisors, preschool heads, teacher educators, etc. in government organizations, private institutions and non government organizations, etc. They may also work as social entrepreneurs and open their own ECCE setting

  • What is the need for a specialized Masters’ programme in education with focus on ECCE?

    There is a dearth of professionals in the field of ECCE in our country despite great demand. The ECCE programmes have been recognized globally as important for facilitating overall development of the children in their early years. The Education courses generally focus on education in elementary and higher grades. NTT (Nursery Teachers’ Training) and NTE (Nursery Teachers’ Education) courses are teachers’ training courses and do not engage with ECCE as a discipline.

    The MA Education (ECCE) programme has been designed with the aim to build capacity and effective leadership in the field of early childhood care and education.

  • Why should I join MA Education (ECCE)/PG Diploma in ECCE?

    You should join MA Education (ECCE) programme, if you want to work as any of the following in future:

    • as a curriculum developer in ECCE
    • social entrepreneur and open your own preschool/crèche
    • teacher educator in ECCE
    • programme evaluator of the ECCE programmes or
    • scholar or researcher in the field of ECCE.

    After doing the P.G Diploma programme, you can:

    • work as supervisors, co-ordinators or heads of preschools/ crèches/ day care centres or
    • set up your own preschool/crèche.
  • Can graduate from any field/discipline apply for the program?

    Yes you can. Infact, the eligibility criteria for both the programmes is:

    Essential:

    Bachelors / Masters degree with minimum 45%marks (or equivalent grade) in any discipline. (Relaxations in marks for reserved categories will be as per the Government of NCT of Delhi norms).

    Desirable:

    One year experience in the field of child development or Early Childhood care and Education.

  • What is the structure of MA Education (ECCE) and PG Diploma (ECCE) programmes?

    MA Education (ECCE):

    Total credits: 70 delivered over four semesters

    PG Diploma (ECCE): 38 credits delivered over two semesters

    The core courses in both these programmes are as follows:

    MA Education (ECCE) and PG Diploma (ECCE) courses in the Semester 1 and Semester 2:

    • Understanding Children and Childhood
    • Play, Learning and Creativity
    • Language Development and Early Literacy
    • Early childhood Care and Education in India
    • Introduction to Education Research
    • Engaging with Family and Communities
    • Observing and Assessing Young Children’s Development and Learning
    • Developing Early childhood Curriculum

    • Summer Internship

    There is an exit option after Semester 2 in the MA programme leading to the award of the   PG Diploma (ECCE). However, the summer Internship is planned differently for the Masters’ and the PG Diploma programmes.

    Students of the Masters’ programmes also have to take two elective courses from a basket of courses in education and ECCE offered at SES or they may choose any courses from across schools as well. Masters’ students have to submit a dissertation as well at the end of the second year.

  • Tell me briefly about the pedagogy in both these programmes.

    The classes are conducted in an interactive mode based on readings, audio visual materials, field experiences and interaction with experts in the field. The learners are expected to engage in critical discussions on issues related to access, equity and quality in ECCE

  • What is the admission procedure for both these programmes?

    Admissions 2016 - Important Dates (Tentative)

    Online applications open:  11th April 2016

    Last date for submission of application forms:  24th June 2016

    Admissions will be done on the basis of an entrance test and then interview of the candidates who pass the entrance test. The entrance test will be conducted on 7th July, 2016. Questions of the written test will be based on two readings which will be uploaded on the AUD website approximately two weeks prior to the test. The candidates are expected to study these readings thoroughly before coming for the entrance test. The hard copies of these readings will be provided in the entrance test; hence candidates are not allowed to bring their own copies of these readings in the entrance test rooms.

    The lists of candidates selected for interviews (which are to be conducted on 13th and 14th July, 2016) and thereafter the lists of selected candidates for admissions in both these programmes will be uploaded on the AUD website.

  • What are the total number of seats in the M.A Education (ECCE) and the PG Diploma in ECCE ?

    MA Education (ECCE):    30 (including reservations as per norms)

    PG Diploma (ECCE):      10 (including reservations as per norms)

  • What is the fees for MA Education (ECCE) and PG Diploma(ECCE) programmes?

    The fees for PG programmes at AUD is Rs 1250 per credit + Rs. 500 per semester for student welfare + Rs 5000 refundable caution deposit (subject to change).

    For both MA Education (ECCE) and PG Diploma (ECCE) programmes, the fees of the first Semester is about Rs. 29, 080/- (approximately) (including student welfare fund and the caution money).

  • Is there financial support available at AUD for needy students?

    Yes;    AUD extends full or partial fee waivers to students who come from economically weaker background. In addition, needy students are given assistance for academic related expenses from the ‘Student Welfare Fund’. There are also scholarships for meritorious students (please refer to AUD website/ Bulletin of Information for details)

  • What is the policy on refund of fees?

    Only caution deposit will be refunded to candidates who withdraw admission after the orientation day. However, the entire fee amount, after deducting Rs.1000/- as processing fee, will be refunded to candidates who withdraw before the orientation day.

  • What kind of support will I get from AUD for my job placement after completing MA Education (ECCE)/ PG Diploma in ECCE?

    CECED is in the process of establishing a Career cum Placement Cell for providing support to the students graduating from both these programmes. The support will be in the form of career counselling, assisting students in making their curriculum vitae, conducting workshops for helping students in personality grooming, inviting organizations for conducting on campus interviews etc.
